A proposal: Two types of MMMs
First Monday of Every Month: Student and Postdoc only MMM.
Chaired by a different student each time (roster organised by the MMM organisers)
Content:
* Conference practice talks by students
* Update talks by students, e.g,. "this is what I found in Expt 1, and here’s what I plan to do in Expt 2 ...."
* Maybe some instructional stuff of particular interest to students
General MMMs – all MARCS.
Chaired by a different student each time (roster organised by the MMM organisers)
Content:
A. Published paper MMMs: about once every 4 to 8 weeks or so have an MMM dedicated to talks on published papers - up to 3 talks (10 mins talk + 10 mins discussion each (max) about recently published papers. No need to have every MARCS published paper presented, but a representative sample from a range of people.
B. General MMMs, including:
i. WIDAWIDIs
ii. Papers by visiting students, interns
iii. Float CoCs (i.e., early versions of CoCs in which ideas are being formed, rather than reasonably polished versions just before these are to be presented for College review
iv. Instructional stuff re MARCS equipment, s/w use, stats, etc., etc., by staff, students, visitors etc.
v. Other

I think having a separate MMM for students and post docs once a month is a great idea, but I can forsee problems with conference presentations being confined to these days. First, we may have several people presenting at the same conference and not enough time for all practices and following comments to be held on one day. Second, if a conference is to take place at the end of the month, presenters would have to have their presentation ready almost a month early to practice it in front of this larger audience. I suggest the solution is to be flexible enough with the content of MMMs to be able to hold these practice presentations on other weeks if needed.
ReplyDeleteIn the past, we have arranged for additional conference practice talk times as they were required. This worked reasonably well, providing that a suitable room was available.
ReplyDeleteI am happy with the proposal. Seems reasonable. It does seem repetitious to present CofC float and CofC Practise at MMMs. I enjoy the WADAWIDIs and hearing the progress of other member's research.

ReplyDeleteThe suggestions for MMMs look great to me. I'd also like to suggest the following:
ReplyDeletei) "Update talks by students, eg. “this is what I found in Expt 1, and here’s what I plan to do in Expt 2…"
Could non-students! opt to present this kind of thing too?
ii) "Published paper MMMs: about once every 4 to 8 weeks or so, MMM dedicated to talks on published papers - up to 3 talks (10 mins talk + 10 mins discussion each (max) about recently published papers. No need to have every MARCS published paper presented, but a representative sample from a range of people."
How about lab news each week in the MMM refer to articles (authors, title, and jnl only) that have just appeared; it would reflect those 'just out' publications on the web site. Just a thought.
iii) Use research group meetings (e.g., Speech and Language or other special interest groups) to discussed proposed design and analyses....works well in MSA fortnightly Monday afternoon meetings.
